About Space Smuggler Blooze
Game Development As Art
March 23rd 2026
When I started developing Space Smuggler Blooze I wanted to create a modern version of some of the classic arcade 2d scroller space action games like Defender where you put your quarter in, last as long as you can, and see if your score makes it to the list. I wanted to keep it simple and fun but with strategic depth where there are many paths to the high score. So I myself have not really been a gamer since the late 80’s, but there was something about the games of that era that I stopped coming across as often. A game that was simple to learn but difficult and rewarding to master. At least that was my experience but admittedly once I got a car I stopped looking at games.
My first foray back into the world of gaming was not as a player, but as a programmer that wanted to learn how to finish some games I had started when I was 9 or 10 on my Commodore 64 in basic. So I started making some simple games in pygames. I couldn’t quite get them as refined as I wanted to in Python so I started looking at editors and languages that were specifically designed for making games and I found Godot and gdscript. Immediately I knew that I had made the right choice. I learned the basics making games like Black Jack At Wild Bill’s Saloon, Snakester: Easter Sunday, and Squidler: Under The Bus World Tour. At that point I decided I wanted to do a full 16 level game with a unique look and feel, fast action, strategy, humor, great music, and worldbuilding with memorable characters and a story line that was filled with creativity and uniqueness. In February of 2025 I started the most ambitious project I have ever attempted. I started building Space Smuggler Blooze.
It has been over a year now and I have put over 2500 hours into writing and recording 16 original songs plus over a dozen instrumental theme songs, generating thousands of graphic images, developing game mechanics and strategic elements, creating characters and a story line, and writing thousands of lines of code. After a year of hard work the end is finally in sight. By July 2026 I intend to have a complete project in beta form and a game that I think will entertain anybody looking for what I was looking for out of a game. Easy to pick up, immediately entertaining, but requiring quick reflexes, strategic depth, and plenty of reward for overcoming increasingly difficult challenges.
I am looking forward to seeing if this game can carve out a little place for itself in the indie gaming world.
